Match report - game 1, 25th March 2009

Last week, Bitheadz FC made it's debut on the field of battle in the Deakin Uni Mens C section of the Futsal competition - and a battle it certainly was!

The lineup for our first match was:

14. Nhan Nguyen
18. Edward Williams
9. Brad Horton
11. Shane Johnston (sub)

We were taking on the explosive-sounding 8-man Bazooka Team, and although Bitheadz made a fair fist of it, we were quickly on the back foot, defending corners, kick-ins, and setpieces all over our own half. Before too long, 3 goals had been shot past us.

Just before halftime, a brief incident spiralled a little out of control, but a misunderstanding was quickly cleared up and both teams made friends again (helped by a fourth goal to Bazooka Team) - 4-0 at half time.

Bitheadz re-strategised during the break, and found a bit more success in the second half - choking off Bazooka's options and playing very hard, physical defence, we were able to win the ball several times. James Pham and Shane Johnston were both instrumental in getting forward movements happening, Nhan Nguyen and Edward Williams managing a couple of runs up either flank, and Brad Horton even put one in the back of the net, but unfortunately the goal was disallowed as he had shot from within the penalty-area.

However the physical play was beginning to get costly - fouls coughed up by Bitheadz resulted in more setpieces to defend, but we were holding steady in terms of those - it was now open play we were being hurt on. Bazooka were content to sit back and allow Bitheadz to stay forward, and nabbed us on the counter - and boy were they quick! They also had some very fluid passing play which they had held back on a little in the first half. It was, unfortunatley, very quickly 8-0.

We were awarded a penalty for a handball in their penalty-area, which Van Pham stepped up to take, however it was well kept out by the Bazooka keeper.

Just on full time, a 5th foul was committed by Bitheadz and a penalty awarded to Team Bazooka. Brad Horton manned up in goals, after another brief misunderstanding, and Bazooka took the shot straight into Brad's eager arms - Final score 8-0.
